Chapter 9
Barefoot and still wearing her short strappy silk nightgown, Shelby frowned at the inside of the sparse stainless steel refrigerator. “Want me to take your place tonight?”“No. Absolutely not.” They’d done that before, just like every other set of twins. But not since prep school. And certainly not this time. The thought of Cody and Shelby together? Unbearable.
“Sounds serious, mi amora.”
“I hate it when you do that.”
“What?”
“Every time you come back from another country you have to use every new word you know a hundred times.”
Shelby turned around. “Sensitive, aren’t we?”
Ignoring her, Sara shook her head at the amazing amount of clutter on the kitchen countertops. Already, their apartment was a mess. Boxes of Belgian and Swiss chocolates, bottles of perfume and two cases of French wine covered the granite. “You’ve been home for only one day and look at this place.”
Shelby closed the door and picked up one of the boxes of chocolate. “I sure hope you get laid tonight.”
“Funny.” Sara checked the wine to make sure none needed to be temperature controlled. She told Shelby almost everything, but this was off limits. No way would she tell her sister the details about the last few nights with Cody. Just thinking about the scene in the kitchen almost made Sara drop a bottle of obscenely expensive perfume. “I’m putting the wine in the pantry. You get rid of the perfume.”
“Forget the wine, what about this guy?” Shelby ripped open one of the boxes, selected a chocolate and then passed the box to Sara.
It was only nine in the morning, but what the hell. This wouldn’t be the first odd thing she’d done this week. She made two chocolate selections and then carried her coffee to the totally impractical frosted glass kitchen table Shelby had insisted upon.
Shelby brought the box with her and plopped down opposite Sara. Even with her hair a tangled mess and makeup smudged under her eyes, Shelby looked gorgeous.
It wasn’t fair. Especially since they were identical twins. “Tell me everything. Where you met. What he does. What he looks like…”
“He’s the lawyer from New York—”
Shelby put down the dark chocolate she’d bitten into. “New York?”
“Yes, he’s the guy I mentioned before.” In fact, she kind of hoped Shelby had forgotten.
“Hmm. Guess he was interested, after all.”
“Not really. He’s here on business.”
“But he’s seen you every night, yes?”
“Well, yeah.”
“So explain why you don’t want to go to La Maisonette tonight. You know their escargot is to die for.”
Sara cleared her throat. “I haven’t exactly told him everything about me.”
Shelby soberly held Sara’s gaze, and nodded. If anyone understood, she did. Even more than their parents. “Is he someone you would tell?”
“Yes, eventually,” Sara said slowly.
Shelby planted her elbows on the table and leaned forward. “He’s special, huh?”
“He’s not supposed to be.”
Shelby smiled. “It’s about time.”
“Don’t get excited. It’s really complicated.”
“Only if you let it be.”
“No, seriously.” Sara took a deep breath. “Cody is sort of, well, he’s kind of a snob.”
Shelby’s mouth opened, but it took her a moment before she said, “I would have expected you to bring home a gorilla first.
